ABOUT US

Drycleaning Storey. Clothing and other textiles for centuries were traditionally cleaned by washing in water, and indeed, even today this method is still a very successful way of maintaining the wearability of many garments. However, washing in water can be a problem because of the differing reaction to water on linings, interlinings and outer fabrics. Originally a satisfactory result could only be obtained by dismembering tailored garments washing each piece by hand and after pressing, reassembling the whole garment.

Undoubtedly only wealthier citizens could afford to have their clothes cleaned professionally.

Legend would have us believe that drycleaning was discovered spectacularly by accident.

The popular story within the drycleaning industry is that Frenchman, Jean-Baptiste Jolly, the owner of a Paris dyeworks operating under the name of Jolly-Berllin, made the discovery in 1825.

A servant in the Jolly household upset an oil lamp filled with camphene onto a table cloth. When the cloth dried over night Jolly was amazed to see that the area over which the camphene had spilled was so clean it showed up the dirtiness of the rest of the cloth.

Jolly quickly appreciated that such a process could be used to clean fabrics without wetting them with water, and the process not only removed oils and dirt but did not swell the fibres and made pressing and finishing easier and more efficent. The process was first known as french cleaning and eventually became known as drycleaning.

As with most legends, there is an element of truth behind the story. Where legend approaches fact is that a leading exponent of the technique of solvent immersion was indeed the aforementioned company of Jolly-Bellin.
